10 Ways You Can De-Stress After Work
All work and no play makes for a stressed John or Jane. It is easy to forget to take care of ourselves when we are too worn out by work. We go home stressed, cruise on autopilot until we go to sleep, and the very same cycle of tiredness and stress starts all over again the very next day. Whatever happened to a little R&R? Learn how to balance business with pleasure by using one (or all) of these 10 ways to de-stress:
1. Get in contact
There are a lot of things we can do to improve our well-being. When stressed, our sense of human contact can get warped and neglected. Any type of touch – from hugging to kissing, to a pat on a shoulder, to high fives, to having sex – can be a satisfying and relaxing de-stressor. If you are giving of yourself to people, you will likely receive good vibes in return.
2. Get a massage
What’s more relaxing than surrendering yourself to the confident touch of someone whose job is to relax your body? With a massage, your mind can unwind, and if your stress gets to you in the form of a physical pain, a massage can help you alleviate pain and allow you to sleep easier. Better sleep means more energy and better concentration for you to break the zombified cycle.
3. Go for a run
Sweat out the stress by going for a run outdoors – you will keep your mind and body strong and active, and it makes for a great change of pace. Moreover, people who are more active live longer— instead of focusing on your worries and stress, you can focus on breaking a sweat.
The practice of yoga restores and maintains the balance of mind and body. Yoga works to reduce the release of the stress hormone, cortisol, while enhancing feel-good triggers and increasing the body’s overall strength and flexibility.
Some people’s fondest childhood memories involve the smell of baked goods filling up the house. Trigger happy memories like these and create more fond memories of your own by baking. Not only will it satisfy your sweet tooth, but following directions to make sure your cookies come out right gives you something positive to focus on and will enable you to de-stress.
6. Read a book
Join the adventures of your novel’s characters when you cuddle up under the covers to read a book. When you leave off at a cliffhanger, you can come home excited to start reading again, and anticipation and excitation is the stuff of life. Reading can also make for a great post-work de-destressor as you lull yourself into a comfortable night’s sleep.
7. Start a journal/blog
Get your creative juices flowing by starting a journal/blog. It gives you something to focus on aside from work and it can keep your entertained. Writing enables you to express your thoughts onto a page, whether good or bad. You can inspire yourself or others with your words. Furthermore, you yourself can always go back to your writings are a source of inspiration when you need to.
8. Take a nap
Naps help you clear your mind and recharge your spirits after a long day of work. Moreover, the mere luxury of taking time off for yourself is relaxing.
9. Take a bubble bath
Eliminate negativity and add bubbles and you’ve got yourself “me time” after work! You can relax and not have to think about anything while you treat yourself to a luxurious bubble bath. Use soothing scents, such as lavender, in your bath for an even more relaxing time. Lavender, bergamot and wild currant candles are also great to add to your mini spa time.
10. Listen to music
There’s a reason why even the medical field recognizes the legitimacy of music therapy – music heals the soul. Music makes a workout go by quicker, sets the mood at a party and helps you unwind after a stressful day at work.
After a long, hard day at work, you deserve to take time for yourself to unwind, and any of these methods will make for a satisfying way to relax both body and mind.
